The expansion of knowledge in the area of cancer biology which has taken place over the last 40 years has profoundly influenced clinical cancer research and made high-quality multidisciplinary cancer care imperative. In the United States, Comprehensive Cancer Centres (CCCs) have existed for a long time. To enhance their effectiveness and quality, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has developed an accreditation methodology for CCCs . NCI-designated CCCs are characterised by innovative high-quality cancer research covering the complete trajectory—from basic to clinical research, as well as dissemination of acquired knowledge.
